A sofa sets the pace of a living room. The right choice should feel comfortable, make sense of the room’s proportions and leave enough space to move naturally. Before choosing a silhouette or fabric, start with the space it will occupy.

1. Measure the room, then the route into it

Measure the available wall length, but also note door swings, radiators, sockets, windows and the relationship between the sofa and other furniture. Use masking tape on the floor to mark the sofa’s footprint. You will quickly see whether a deep seat, a chaise or a modular arrangement suits the room.

Think beyond the room itself. Front doors, narrow hallways, staircases and lifts can determine whether a large item will reach its intended position. For modular furniture, check the dimensions of individual sections and packaged pieces rather than relying on the overall sofa dimensions alone.

2. Allow the room to breathe

A generous sofa can look elegant without dominating a space, provided there is a clear circulation route. Aim to leave comfortable room to walk past the main seating and enough distance to use side tables and storage. A coffee table should be easy to reach from the seats, but should not obstruct everyday movement.

In smaller rooms, visual weight matters as much as the measurements. Slimmer arms, raised legs and a lighter silhouette can make the floor feel more open. A larger room may accommodate deeper seating or a lower, more architectural profile.

3. Choose a seating arrangement for your routine

Consider how you actually use the room. A straight sofa with an occasional chair may suit conversations and flexible layouts. A corner sofa can define an open-plan area. Modular pieces offer configuration choices, but always check the available connecting modules and finished dimensions for the exact product.

If you often entertain, think about sight lines and seating facing one another. If the room is primarily a place to unwind, consider seat depth, back support and the space needed to stretch out. Comfort is personal; where possible, review the product specifications and try the seating before committing.

4. Look closely at materials and finishes

Colour is only one part of upholstery. Texture, weave, pile direction and light can change how a fabric looks throughout the day. Ask for a material sample when available and view it in natural and artificial light. For busy homes, consider how the fabric is cleaned and what care routine the supplier recommends.

Pairing materials is often more effective than matching everything. A textured sofa can sit beautifully alongside a smooth timber table, while a restrained palette allows a single distinctive chair to become the focus.

5. Check the technical information

Before placing an order, review the product’s width, depth, height and any assembly requirements. Confirm whether the listed dimensions describe the complete set or individual modules. For made-to-order furniture, clarify lead times, finish options and delivery arrangements with the supplier rather than assuming that an online image represents a stocked configuration.

A thoughtful final check

Stand at the room’s entrance and consider the sight line, natural light and walking routes. The best sofa is not necessarily the largest: it is the one that makes daily life easier and feels at home with everything around it.
